The Canby Center

At The Center

Every person is designed for dignity.

Poverty is more than just a financial circumstance. It’s a relational problem that requires relational solutions. At The Canby Center our vulnerable neighbors are treated with the dignity and love they deserve. This is to help them to know their value and see themselves in a new light.

Basic, immediate needs must be met before the deeper work of growth can begin; it’s not possible to grow, learn, or move forward when you’re hungry or hurting. That’s why we have provided 9,984 hot lunches in the last 12 months. These no-charge meals open a door to renewed dignity.

Members and guests respectfully receive food assistance, clothing, and dental care to meet their physical needs so they have one less crisis to worry about. One of the keys to building long-term security is personal responsibility, and that’s a core principle of our service model. While we begin with a no-charge meal, our Thriving Together Member families are required to give back by serving others and learning how to manage their finances. Currently 390 families participate in our Thriving Together program and benefit from food, clothing, and life-skills training. With your help, we create opportunities for members and guests to say yes to education and to do the hard work of strengthening family relationships. This way, they know what they’re truly capable of within a community of caring people.

Building for Tomorrow

The Canby Center’s building project has made some great progress in the last month!  Our foundation work has begun in earnest including preparation for pouring footings. The anticipate 15 month build time will take us well into next summer. While service pivots and interruptions are expected, these will be brief. Please pray for the right people to connect with this special opportunity for Canby as we enter an important phase of the project. Maybe you would consider buying a brick to be placed at the entrance to our building?

Together We Give: Donor Spotlight

Jeff and Shirley Hollar of Canby, OR, remember when The Canby Center was a bold idea of one local church. Today, they’re proud to be monthly supporters.

What aspects of The Canby Center’s work resonate most with you, and why? “We love the model of giving back,” Jeff said, referring to the 1 volunteer hour per month required to be a Thriving Together member who receives regular service. We believe real help is found not just being on the receiving end, but being part of something. “It is just wonderful. Rather than enabling bad habits, the accountability and personal responsibility aspects of The Canby Center’s service model really resonate with us.”

How do you feel when you see the results of the programs and initiatives you support?

  • “There are so many good causes that need support,” Jeff said. “It’s nice to support something in town, helping our local community. For me it’s about loving my neighbor and by giving to The Canby Center, I don’t have to go far to show that love.”

  • “I feel excited about the building expansion,” Shirley said. “The needs are growing and The Canby Center is growing with them. It’s exciting to see God opening doors at each step.”

What would you say to someone who is considering making their first donation to The Canby Center? “It’s an upstanding organization with financial transparency” Shirley said. “If donors like us have a question, the leaders are so accessible! We’ve met one-on-one with the Executive Director and Board Members and feel confident in what our financial support accomplishes.”

In Step With Service

Dan Drazan’s service on The Canby Center’s board of directors began in 2023. “I wanted to be involved at a leadership level with an organization that shares my faith,” Dan said. “The Canby Center is exemplary in the community and has a mission and method that I fully support.” Dan serves as the board’s Vice Chair and is the Replication committee chair. His work as a real estate attorney, development projects, and photography keep him out of trouble. Otherwise, Dan can be found fishing on the Northwest’s beautiful rivers.

Born and raised in Walla Walla, WA, Dan attended Lewis & Clark College and Willamette University College of Law. In 1999 Dan and his wife, Christine, moved to Canby and raised their family here.

Dan is a real estate attorney on Dunn Carney LLP’s Real Estate Team where he strives to provide successful and efficient navigation of complex transactions and legal issues for his clients.
